Roydon School Prospectus

Sex education

All sex education takes place against the background of a school which believes in caring for each other. All questions from the children are answered straightforwardly when they arise, with an answer that matches the child’s ability to understand.

During the upper junior years, the children study the human body and life processes. As part of this, they learn more about the human reproductive system and human birth. Along with the facts, teachers impart an expectation that this is a wonderful thing that follows a lot of love and a stable relationship between adults, and is something involving great responsibility and respect for others.

We find that children accept and easily absorb the simple facts of sex education if they are offered before puberty, and offered carefully. At this age the personal emotions that give rise to embarrassment have not developed – there is only the interest and satisfaction that children obtain from every other area of learning. The biological facts are part of the National Curriculum, which is statutory, but parents may withdraw their children from any sex education that is additional to this.
