Roydon School Prospectus

Religious worship / assemblies

An act of worship is held every day; these vary in character. They include stories, drama, music, celebrations, special visitors etc. On three days a week the whole school meets together; on one day there are separate infant and junior assemblies, and on one day a short act of worship takes place in each classroom. All teachers take turns to lead the assemblies, as well as the Headteacher. The children themselves regularly create and conduct the entire occasion. Visitors are invited to lead assemblies on occasions, to share their expertise and experience with the children. The children are taught that ‘Assembly’ is a time for stillness and thinking – about ourselves, other people, and God. We also, however, enjoy a lot of lively singing and share experiences and ideas. On Fridays at 9.00 am we have special ‘Achievement Assemblies’ where we celebrate children’s efforts, achievements, and progress.

While assemblies do extend the religious education of the children, they are more than that, because they are also an act of worship. Reference is made to God as a loving Father, simple prayers are offered, and we move some way towards the concept of reverence. Common themes are those of wonder at the many miracles around us and gratitude for many blessings; of considering men, women and children who have shown greatness; of considering excellence wherever it may be found, including within our own community; of considering the best way to live life, and the difference between right and wrong. Our assemblies are based on the ethics of Christianity, but our themes are those common to all faiths and awareness of other religions. Nevertheless, a request from parents to withdraw a child from assembly or from religious education will be respected, although we may have to ask for help with supervision.
