Swimming Galas: 24th March 2009

Congratulations to the Roydon Swimming Team for their phenomonal success at the School Swimming Gala on 24th March 2009.  What a splendid way to spend the afternoon, I screamed and cheered myself hoarse, as the team annihilated the competition. The excitement built, as we watched our swimmers defeat three schools in the first gala, then most amazingly, another three schools in a second gala, which followed straight on.

Roydon were the only team to compete in both gala's. We were all so very proud as they repeated their success against the next three teams, bearing in mind they had the disadvantage of having already raced. With guts, determination and fuelled by adrenaline they proved that they were true champions on the day.

Every member of the team had a swim, Mrs Collins is convinced that they all swam their personal best. They have all dedicated themselves to the training sessions on Friday evenings, they have raced against one another, grown fitter and raised their game. They proved to be a united, bonded team, supporting and encouraging each swimmer, they were good sports and were polite to their competitors.

The coaching has clearly been of such high standard that I am considering recommending, Mrs Collins, Miss Briggs and Mr Gallagher to the 2012 Olympic Swimming Team as trainers!

Thanks rightly go to everyone who participated and did us proud, but I must also mention the enthusiastic parent support, it cheering was a sport, we would have won another award on the day!

S
chool Quiz: 24 April 2008

I attended an after school Quiz held at Millwards School in Harlow on Thursday 24th April at 5pm. Our Team had made the semi-final of an inter-school Quiz.  I asked if I could go along to watch the pupils,  and to show support for them on behalf of the Governing Body.

Our Team was made up of 5 pupils (2 girls and 3 boys) from Year 6, selected by Mrs Slasberg (and Miss Dennis), based on their abilities in Literacy, Maths and Science.  Mrs Slasberg confirmed that in the selection process she considered which pupils would be able to cope with the quiz in terms of pressure, etc.

The questions, which the pupils chose at random from a selection of numbers held by the Quiz Master, included topics on current news, science and general knowledge.

The Team was very upbeat, motivated and appeared proud to be representing the School. Parents were also there to support their children and gave much encouragement.

I was very impressed with the pupils' mature attitude and behaviour throughout the event. They encouraged and supported each other, when allowed, during the quiz (some rounds did not allow for conferring). Mrs Slasberg accompanied the pupils and provided her support and encouragement prior to the quiz starting and also afterwards, giving each pupil positive feedback.

Sadly, after much effort from the pupils, we did not win. I would note however, that even though the team had a slow start, they caught up with the other team to such an extent that there was only a single point in it at the end. The questions were tough at times and I was delighted to see how much our pupils know, especially surrounding events that had happened in the news that week surrounding politics and other matters (and embarrassed to say how much I appeared not to know!).

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable event for the pupils.
